Stutenkerl – Christmas yeast dough man

Ein süßes, kleines Geschenk für liebe Freunde sind Stutenkerle. Ein einfacher, süßer Hefeteig. 2x gut aufgehen lassen und verkneten. Die Augen, Münder und Knöpfe sind kleingeschnittene Trockenpflaumen. Eine Freundin neckte mich, warum die zwar Knöpfe, aber keine Eier hätten. Ich erklärte ihr: DESHALB heißen sie Stutenkerle… den Stuten sind weibliche Pferde 😉

A sweet, little giveaway for dear friends are these Stutenkerle. Hard to translate. A word-by-word translation would be mare fellow. But this does not really make sense. It’s a simple sweet yeast dough. It has to rise twice and each time has to be kneaded well. The eyes, mouths and buttons are made from dried prunes. A friend of mine pulled me a leg why the have buttons but no balls 😉 I told her: This is why they are called Stutenkerle (mare fellows)… because mares  have no balls 😉
